چکیده

Methods Prospective, observational, multicenter study conducted in 148 Spanish ICUs. Individuals with A(H1N1) confirmed using RT-PCR during the 2009 to 2014 influenza seasons were included and compared with those patients with SpCoI. Patients ́ demographic, clinical, radiologic features, laboratory values, ICU and hospital length of stay (LOS) and outcomes were recorded. Discrete variables are expressed as counts (percentage) and continuous variables as medians with 25th to 75th interquartile range (IQR). Differences between groups were assessed using the x2 test and the Fisher exact test for categoric variables and Mann-Whitney U test for continuous variables.

Bacterial coinfections in lung tissue specimens from fatal cases of 2009 pandemic influenza A (H1N1) - United States, May-August 2009.

In previous influenza pandemics, studies of autopsy specimens have shown that most deaths attributed to influenza A virus infection occurred concurrently with bacterial pneumonia, but such evidence has been lacking for 2009 pandemic influenza A (H1N1). To help determine the role of bacterial coinfection in the current influenza pandemic, CDC examined postmortem lung specimens from patients with...

Procalcitonin for diagnosis of bacterial pneumonia in critically ill patients during 2009 H1N1 influenza pandemic: a prospective cohort study, systematic review and individual patient data meta-analysis

INTRODUCTION Procalcitonin (PCT) is helpful for diagnosing bacterial infections. The diagnostic utility of PCT has not been examined thoroughly in critically ill patients with suspected H1N1 influenza. METHODS Clinical characteristics and PCT were prospectively assessed in 46 patients with pneumonia admitted to medical ICUs during the 2009 and 2010 influenza seasons. An individual patient dat...

Bacterial coinfection in influenza: a grand rounds review.

Bacterial coinfection complicated nearly all influenza deaths in the 1918 influenza pandemic and up to 34% of 2009 pandemic influenza A(H1N1) infections managed in intensive care units worldwide. More than 65,000 deaths attributable to influenza and pneumonia occur annually in the United States. Data from 683 critically ill patients with 2009 pandemic influenza A(H1N1) infection admitted to 35 ...

A distinct influenza infection signature in the blood transcriptome of patients with severe community-acquired pneumonia

INTRODUCTION Diagnosis of severe influenza pneumonia remains challenging because of a lack of correlation between the presence of influenza virus and clinical status. We conducted gene-expression profiling in the whole blood of critically ill patients to identify a gene signature that would allow clinicians to distinguish influenza infection from other causes of severe respiratory failure, such...

The behavior and diagnostic utility of procalcitonin and five other inflammatory molecules in critically ill patients with respiratory distress and suspected 2009 influenza a H1N1 infection

OBJECTIVES During the 2009 influenza A H1N1 pandemic, it became difficult to differentiate viral infections from other conditions in patients admitted to the intensive care unit. We sought to evaluate the behavior and diagnostic utility of procalcitonin, C-reactive protein and four other molecules in patients with suspected 2009 Influenza A H1N1 infection. METHODS The serum levels of procalci...
